Three ways to reduce allergens in your home

It’s that time of year again! You are congested. You have a perpetual runny nose, and you’re constantly sneezing. These are all caused by allergens. While you can take medications to treat yourself, the best solution is to eliminate or at least significantly reduce them to avoid suffering altogether. If you or your family are sensitive to allergens during this time of the year, there are many fairly simple ways to reduce or eliminate them altogether.

Dust mites, animal dander, and mold are the three main allergens that affect most allergy sufferers. The following three tips will help you reduce your symptoms if you are currently suffering and help prevent them from recurring throughout the year.

If possible, try to keep your windows and doors closed as much as you can. It does help your home to have them open once in a while to air things out but keeping doors and windows open is a significant way to invite a constant flow of allergens to enter your home. While screened doors and windows will keep the bugs out, it does not stop mold and pollen spores from entering, and then they can easily travel throughout your home.

Be mindful of humid environments because mold thrives in these types of conditions. Be sure to control the humidity levels in your home to keep it to a minimum. Humidity levels around 50% will keep things in check. If you have a basement, a dehumidifier is also a good investment. Remember to keep your kitchen, bathrooms, and basement clean because these areas were significant contributors to higher humidity levels. Do you have houseplants? If so, you might want to consider relocating certain plants outdoors, as these tend to be havens for mold.

If you’re suffering from allergens, we strongly urge you to change your air filters in hour home regularly. We recommend changing them at least every three months – best to do it monthly if you suffer from severe allergies. Not only will this help to trap allergens and keep them from affecting your health, your air conditioning and furnace will operate much more efficiently and cost-effectively. We offer a low-cost filter replacement program click here to learn more. If dust mites are a problem, you can buy allergen-impermeable covers and encase your mattress and pillows.

Finally, we recommend investing in a whole-house air filtration system. We have multiple solutions available for all house types and floorplans. We also offer industry-leading finance, lease and purchase rates that can fit any kind of budget.
