It’s that time of year again! You are congested. You have a perpetual runny nose, and you’re constantly sneezing. These are all caused by allergens. While you can take medications to treat yourself, the best solution is to eliminate or at least significantly reduce them to avoid suffering altogether. If you or your family are sensitive to allergens during this time of the year, there are many fairly simple ways to reduce or eliminate them altogether.
Dust mites, animal dander, and mold are the three main allergens that affect most allergy sufferers. The following three tips will help you reduce your symptoms if you are currently suffering and help prevent them from recurring throughout the year.
If possible, try to keep your windows and doors closed as much as you can. It does help your home to have them open once in a while to air things out but keeping doors and windows open is a significant way to invite a constant flow of allergens to enter your home. While screened doors and windows will keep the bugs out, it does not stop mold and pollen spores from entering, and then they can easily travel throughout your home.
Be mindful of humid environments because mold thrives in these types of conditions. Be sure to control the humidity levels in your home to keep it to a minimum. Humidity levels around 50% will keep things in check. If you have a basement, a dehumidifier is also a good investment. Remember to keep your kitchen, bathrooms, and basement clean because these areas were significant contributors to higher humidity levels. Do you have houseplants? If so, you might want to consider relocating certain plants outdoors, as these tend to be havens for mold.
