How do you know when a hot water heater needs to be replaced?

Sometimes the signs may be obvious that there is an issue with your hot water heater, but how can you decide between repair and replacement? Here are some things to look out for:

  • Poor hot water supply. One of the first things you’ll notice is if the water in your house isn’t getting hot – a sure sign that something isn’t working.
  • Rusty or discoloured water. If your hot water is suddenly less than clear it may be due to aging plumbing or corrosion in your water tank.
  • Leaking water around your unit. This could indicate a damaged or failing pressure relief valve – likely an easy fix. Or it could be a cracked or corroded water heater tank, which would mean a replacement is necessary
  • Increased energy usage. Noticing a recent spike in energy consumption? It could be due to an aging, damaged or malfunctioning water tank.
  • Age of unit. If you’ve had your water heater for over 10-20 years, you might experience some or all of the above, making it time for a new unit.

How long does a hot water tank last?

Depending on the type of hot water tank you have, they can last anywhere from 8-15 years. Gas water heaters last between 8-12 years, while electric water heaters typically last 10-15 years.
