Single-zone mini-split heat pumps have one indoor air distribution unit, generally called a “head”, that attaches to a single outdoor unit which looks similar to a standard air conditioner. Multi-zone mini-split heat pumps have multiple indoor units or heads that attach to a single outdoor unit. Choosing between the two depends on your home. Single-zone units are designed for keeping a small space or a specific room at a single temperature.
